Our Story

The Vines at Rosenthal

The Malibu Estate were first planted in 1987 by proprietor and owner George Rosenthal, making it the first vineyard in Malibu. This 28 acre estate is located within four miles of the ocean at 1450 feet above sea level, within a perfect microclimate for growing high-quality grapes.

Rosenthal was designated its very own American Viticulture Area: Malibu Newton Canyon A.V.A. No other wines in the world include grapes grown within the mini-microclimates of Malibu-Newton Canyon.

The Malibu Estate

For a wine to bear the Rosenthal name, 100% of the grapes must come from our Malibu estate. Our hillside vineyards sit just four miles from the Pacific Ocean, where cool marine breezes and abundant sunshine create the ideal microclimate for producing exceptional wines. We grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Viognier, and Chardonnay, all hand-harvested and aged in the finest French oak barrels to showcase the elegance and character of Malibu-Newton Canyon.

G Collection

The G Collection—a nod to our founder, George Rosenthal—celebrates creativity and craftsmanship through distinctive blends. These wines combine select grapes from our Malibu estate with exceptional varietals sourced from other renowned California regions, resulting in unique, expressive blends that capture both our estate’s spirit and California’s diverse terroir.

Surfrider

Our Surfrider label gives us the freedom to explore the best vineyards across California while maintaining the same dedication to quality. Each varietal and blend is hand-selected to deliver a vibrant and approachable expression of California wine.

A portion of every Surfrider bottle sold supports organizations that protect our oceans, waterways, and marine wildlife. Enjoying Surfrider means savoring great wine while helping preserve the beauty of our coastlines.

Meet Our Founder

George Rosenthal started out in business in 1955 when he founded Raleigh Enterprises, a small general contracting firm focused on developing single family residences. The business grew quickly and today the company is a diversified real estate investment and operating company. An international industry leader, Raleigh encompasses 15 wholly owned subsidiaries, including The Sunset Marquis in West Hollywood; Raleigh Film & Television Studios, worldwide; Hollywood Rentals; File Keepers, Inc; and, of course, Rosenthal - The Malibu Estate.

Yet even with all his success, George had never felt quite so fulfilled from an accomplishment as when he tasted his first Malibu vintage, the 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon, and Rosenthal - The Malibu Estate was born.
